Solution by Product · Smart Lock

Will a smart lock actually fit your door?

Smart locks are the category where returns happen most, and almost always for the same reason — the lock did not fit the door. This page shows you the three measurements that decide it, honest battery expectations for Bangladeshi conditions, and the six mistakes that lead to a locksmith at midnight.

Step 1 · Sizing

Step 2 · Scope

What a complete system actually includes

The headline product is rarely more than half the installed cost. These are the parts that get left out of budgets.

RequiredSmart lock body

Matched to door thickness, backset and material. Not universal.

RequiredMechanical override

Key cylinder or emergency power port. Never buy a lock without one.

RequiredBatteries

Usually 4 or 8 AA. Keep a spare set in the house, not in a shop.

OptionalWi-Fi gateway

Needed for remote unlock and access logs. Bluetooth-only locks work at the door only.

OptionalAdditional cards or fobs

For family, staff or tenants who will not use fingerprint.

OptionalDoor reinforcement plate

Thin or hollow doors flex, which misaligns the bolt over time.

OptionalDoor closer

A smart lock assumes the door closes. If it does not, auto-lock will not engage.

OptionalInstallation service

Glass doors and steel doors in particular are not DIY fittings.

What your building needs before installation

Measure thickness, backset and mortise. The three numbers that decide fit. Everything else is preference.

Identify the door material honestly. Aluminium-framed and frameless glass doors need specific bodies. A mortise lock cannot be adapted to glass.

Check the door is not warped. A door that binds in its frame will misalign the bolt, and the motor will strain and eventually fail.

Wi-Fi signal at the door, not the router. Front doors are often the weakest signal point in a house. Test before specifying an app-controlled lock.

Decide where the override key lives. Not inside the house. That is the one place it cannot help you.

Glass doors need drilling before glazing. Where possible. Drilling installed glass is possible but risky and expensive.

Step 5 · Running cost

What it costs after you buy it

Batteries are the only real running cost. Expect 6–10 months in Bangladeshi heat and humidity rather than the year commonly quoted. Locks with a low-battery warning are worth the difference; locks without one fail without notice.

Cards and fobs, where used, get lost. In a shared office or rental, budget replacements.

Motor and bolt wear is minimal on a well-aligned door and significant on a warped one. Door alignment is the variable that decides lock lifespan.

No subscription on locks we supply. Some international app-based brands charge for cloud features — confirm before buying.

The cost nobody plans for: a locksmith at midnight because the batteries died and the override key was inside the house. Every lock we supply has an override. Decide where it lives on day one.

Step 6 · Avoid these

Six mistakes we see repeatedly

Every one has cost a real project real money.

Ordering before measuring

The leading cause of returns in this category. A lock that does not fit is not a warranty issue.

Do this: Measure thickness, backset and mortise. Send us a photo — we confirm fit before you pay.

Assuming a mortise lock adapts to glass

Frameless glass needs a purpose-built body. It cannot be adapted, and the glass may need drilling.

Do this: Identify the door material at enquiry, not at installation.

Trusting the quoted battery life

Manufacturer figures assume moderate use in temperate conditions. Bangladeshi heat and humidity shorten it materially.

Do this: Plan for 6–10 months and choose a lock with a low-battery warning.

Keeping the override key indoors

It is the one place it cannot help you when the batteries die.

Do this: Decide the location on installation day. A trusted neighbour or a car is better than a drawer inside.

Fingerprint-only in a house with elderly parents

Worn fingerprints read poorly. A lock that fails daily for one person becomes a household problem.

Do this: Specify card or keypad as an equal backup, not an afterthought.

Ignoring a door that binds

A warped or badly hung door misaligns the bolt. The motor strains and eventually fails, and it looks like a lock fault.

Do this: Fix the door first. A smart lock cannot compensate for bad hanging.

Guide

Buyer & installer guide

Rules we apply on every installation. Share this with your installer.

01
Measure thickness, backset and material first

These decide whether a lock fits.

02
Match the credential to who opens the door

Family: fingerprint. Offices: card or PIN with app revocation. Rentals: temporary codes.

03
Keep a mechanical key off the premises

The emergency key is useless if it is locked inside.

04
Change batteries yearly

Every lock warns, but warnings get ignored.

05
Glass doors need glass locks

A mortise lock cannot be fitted to frameless glass.

06
Register two administrators

If the only admin fingerprint belongs to one person, a staff change locks you out of the settings.

Selection guide

How to decide, and what to avoid

Three questions decide the lock. The fourth decides whether the client is happy in two years.

1. What is the door made of, and how thick?
Frameless glassA lock designed for glass. Standard mortise bodies do not fit and bracket retrofits rarely look acceptable on a reception door.Measure the glass thickness at survey. It is the specification that most often comes back wrong.
Wooden or steel, standard mortiseThe widest choice. Confirm backset and door thickness before ordering.Apartment doors in Bangladesh vary more than catalogues assume. Measure, do not assume.
Narrow aluminium frameNarrow-stile hardware only. Most residential smart locks will not fit.Check the stile width before quoting anything.
2. Who needs to open it, and how often do those people change?
A household, rarely changesFingerprint plus PIN, with a mechanical key override.Enrol at least two administrators. One-admin households lock themselves out.
Staff, changing regularlyCard-based, so credentials can be issued and revoked without touching the lock.Re-enrolling fingerprints on every staff change does not scale past about ten people.
Guests, per stayHotel locks with a front-desk encoder and a per-door audit trail.Check-out invalidates the card automatically — this is the whole point of the category.
3. What happens when the battery dies?
There must always be a way inMechanical key override, and an external emergency power point.Every good lock has both. Verify on the specific model, do not assume.
Remote or unattended doorAdd low-battery alerting, and put battery replacement on a maintenance schedule.Unattended doors are where lockouts actually happen.
4. Does it need to be part of a wider system?
Standalone is fineSimplest, cheapest, no network dependency.Audit trail stays on the lock.
Must report centrallyChoose a lock that integrates with access control software, not a consumer Wi-Fi lock.Consumer app-based locks do not produce the audit trail a business needs.

Do not buy it this way

Do not order a glass-door lock without the measured glass thickness

It is the single most common return in this category.

Do not fit a consumer Wi-Fi lock on a commercial door

App-based consumer locks depend on a phone, an account and a network. They do not produce a proper audit trail and they fail awkwardly when staff leave.

Do not enrol only one administrator

When that person is unavailable, nobody can add or remove a user. Always enrol two.

Do not rely on the app as the only entry method

Phones die, accounts get locked, networks drop. There must be a physical fallback on every door.

Do not fit fingerprint-only on an exterior door in monsoon conditions

Wet fingers do not read. Provide a card or PIN alternative on any door exposed to weather.

Do not skip the maintenance schedule on battery replacement

A lock is a security device until its battery dies, at which point it is a door that will not open.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask before specifying

Three measurements decide it: door thickness, backset (door edge to handle centre) and mortise dimensions. Most locks handle 35–55 mm thickness and a 55–70 mm backset. Door material matters too — wooden, steel, aluminium and frameless glass each need different lock bodies. Send us a photo and the measurements and we confirm fit before you order.

Expect 6–10 months on typical household use, rather than the year usually quoted. Manufacturer figures assume temperate conditions; heat and humidity shorten battery life materially. Choose a lock with a low-battery warning — locks without one fail with no notice.

Every lock we supply has a mechanical override — either a key cylinder or an emergency power port that accepts a power bank. Never buy a smart lock without one. Equally important: keep the override key somewhere other than inside the house, which is the one place it cannot help you.

Yes, but it needs a lock body designed specifically for glass — a standard mortise lock cannot be adapted. Glass door locks run ৳18,000–45,000 and installation often requires drilling, which is far safer done before the glass is fitted.

For most households, yes. But elderly users and manual workers often have worn fingerprints that read poorly, and a lock that fails daily for one family member becomes a daily argument. If the household includes elderly parents, specify card or keypad as an equal backup rather than an afterthought.

Only for remote unlock, temporary guest codes and access logs viewed away from home. Bluetooth-only locks work at the door without any network. If you do want Wi-Fi features, test the signal at the front door rather than at the router — front doors are often the weakest point in a house.
